A Systematic Approach to Interviews
Success in a job interview is determined long before you walk into the room or join the video call. Preparation breeds confidence, while lack of preparation shows immediately. To ensure you don't forget any critical steps, follow this systematic interview preparation checklist before your next meeting.
1. Research the Company Thoroughly
Never enter an interview without knowing what the company does. Spend 30 minutes researching:
- Their core products, services, and business model.
- Their target audience and competitors.
- Their recent achievements or company news.
- Their work culture (check Glassdoor and their official social media handles).
2. Prepare Your Behaviors and Stories
Most interviews include behavioral questions (e.g., "Tell me about a time you made a mistake"). Prepare 3 or 4 stories from your previous jobs, college projects, or internships that demonstrate:
- Problem-solving capabilities.
- How you handle conflicts within a team.
- Leadership and take-charge actions.
- Your ability to learn quickly under pressure.
Use the **STAR method** (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to tell these stories concisely.
3. Prepare Questions for the Interviewer
At the end of the interview, they will ask: "Do you have any questions for us?" Saying "No" is a missed opportunity to show genuine interest.
Ask thoughtful questions like:
- "What does a typical day look like for someone in this role?"
- "What are the biggest challenges the team is currently facing?"
- "What does success look like in the first 90 days?"
4. Final Tech and Logistics Check (For Virtual Interviews)
- [ ] Test your webcam, microphone, and internet connection.
- [ ] Ensure you have a quiet, well-lit background with no distractions.
- [ ] Dress professionally from head to toe, just like an in-person meeting.
- [ ] Have a digital copy of your resume and a notebook nearby.
